The White Lady

Although the White Lady is not a nice spirit, she does need our sympathy. Every one of these ghost has a different story, but always have two things in common: they hate men, and they committed suicide.

A painting of The White Lady.
The White Lady is always brought about by the same means: in life, she was led to suicide by a man for some reason or another. They then spend the rest of their existence tormenting any man that crosses their path.

In this blog, so far, I haven't used much movie or television references, but I'm going to break that now. In the series Supernatural (S1E1), two brother who hunt supernatural monsters and beings run into something they call a Woman in White. This is based off of this legend. In the episode, Constance Welch is getting cheated on by her husband. This leads to insanity and she kills herself. Her spirit then wonders the back roads, looking for unfaithful men and kills them.

Although this is loosely based off of The White Lady, it's still a very close representation of what they do, and their motives.

A story that is a real legend, happened in Durand Eastman Park, in New York in the early 1800s. The story goes that the woman's daughter went missing, and believed that a local farmer raped and murdered her. She searched for her daughter in vain, until she killed herself. It is now said that she haunts Lake Ontario, but only hurts the males.

So, even though this spirit isn't anything like Casper, she deserves our sympathy. They were driven to madness by the ruthlessness of males.

Do I know if she exists? No. But I sincerely hope that she doesn't, because a spirit like hers reflects the brutal nature of mankind, which is much worse than any monster.
