The Wendigo

The Wendigo is from Algonquian lore. It is believed that it is a cannibalistic spirit takes over the human, causing them to crave human flesh. They are mainly found in Mountain ranges and the forests of the northern United States and Canada. They are an embodiment of evil and greed. They are never happy with just one and they crave human flesh eternally. They are amazing hunters, but what they are best at is storing their food.

The people who are susceptible to the spirit taking them is the people who are suffering from hunger in a harsh winter. The Donner Party, for example.

Most legends say that it is very thing, and smells of decaying flesh. It has been compared to modern day zombies with a severe speed and sharp mentality. Other legends say that it is a fifteen foot giant.

The legend of the Wendigo has so much impact that it's had a disease named after it: The Wendigo Psychosis. This is a disease where people have an undeniable urge to eat flesh even when another food source is available. A famous case is that of  Swift Runner. Although he was only twenty-five miles away from food, he choose to butcher his wife and children to survive. He later admitted to it.

It is believed that Wendigo's are born from this disease. They were taken to healers and were killed if they acted to violently.

Whether or not there are giant creatures in the forest in norther America or southern Canada, the disease is real. You need to be careful, because you never know what might be lurking in the forest.
